THE YEAR 2013
    JANUARY 2013 SUMMARY
    
    January was the second warmest in the past five years with the monthly mean temperature of 41.3   F, a +4.6   F departure.  
    There were 16 days the temperature was 50   F or above. 
    January had only 16 days the min. temperature was 32  F or lower and the max. temperature didn’t rise above freezing 2 days of the month. 
    The 11  F on the 23rd was the lowest temperature since January 31st 2010 when it was 7  F yet the 75  F on the 29th 
    which was the highest temperature ever recorded at this station in January. 
    The maximum of 25  F on the 25th was the second lowest maximum ever recorded at this station for any month 
    with only four days separating the two records.
    Then on the 30th the minimum temperature was 61  F smashing the highest minimum temperature for January by 16  F 
    above the previous four year record.
    The 5.47 inches of precipitation was the greatest amount on record for January. 
    This was a +2.90 inch departure when compared to the past four year average. 
    All of the following set new records for Jan; The most  precipitation in a calendar day, 24hour, 1hour, and 5minute period 
    as well as 14 days with measurable precipitation.  
    The four days or 96 hours from the 14th to the 17th had 68 hours of precipitation and a continuous rain in this period of 53 hours.
    This is believed to be the longest continuous period since November 11th – 13th  2009 
    when we had 60 hours of continuous rain that was also heavier.  
    There was also a thunder snow of 3.0 inches on the 17th and thunder and lightning was observed three times during the storm. 
    The total snowfall for the month was 4.4 inches.
    The maximum wind gust for the month was 43 mph SSW that occurred on the 30th of the month at 1324 was a new record for January 
    and made for the second windiest day in January (wind run was 225.6 miles) since January 2012 when a 247 mile wind run occurred.  
    The lowest barometric pressure of the month was 29.22 inches recorded on the 31st and the highest was 30.60 inches on January 27th.   
    The mean temperature at the Richmond International Airport was 41.3  F, the 29th warmest in the past 116 years. 
    Only 11 years have had a higher daily mean temperature in January than the 65.5  F on the 30th. 
    Only 18 years in the past 116 years have had a higher maximum monthly temperature of 74  F that occurred on the 29th. 
    Two daily records were broken. The 1.56 inches of precipitation recorded for the 17th and the 59  F 
    minimum on the 30th that was a new high minimum temperature. 
    Only January 7th and 8th 1998 have had a warmer January night in the last 116 years. The record is 62  F on the January 8th 1998.
      January was the 15th wettest of the past 126 years. Measurable snowfall at the Richmond International Airport 
    this past January was 3.2 inches the most since 2010.
          
    
    
    
FEBRUARY
    FEBRUARY 2013 SUMMARY

    February was cooler than average as the monthly mean temperature was 39.2  F, a -2.4  F departure. 
    February was the second coolest in the past four years. 
    There were 18 days the minimum temperature dropped below freezing and 0 days that the maximum didn’t climb above freezing. 
    The 1.85 inches of rain for the month was a negative 0.52 inch departure when compared to the four year average. 
    The total frozen precipitation was only 0.2 inches, a negative 5.6 inch departure. 
    The maximum temperature for February was only 64  F on the 15th with only a few warm days. 
    The lowest minimum this month was 16  F recorded on the 2nd and 18th. 
    The maximum wind gust was 32 mph from the south that occurred on Feb. 11th at 1524 hours.  
    The highest barometer recorded for the month was 30.49 inches on the 10th and the lowest was 29.53 inches on the 27th.  
    The winter has been mild as December was the 6th warmest and only February was below average.
    
    The Richmond International Airport
    
    The Richmond International Airport had no daily records this month.  
    Their highest maximum temperature was 63  F on the 11th and 15th; 
    only 12 years since 1897 have had a lower maximum temperature for the month. 
     Using the new recalculated mean temperatures from 1880 to 1896 this winter was the 15th warmest since 1880 
    which is mostly because December 2012 was the 6th warmest December on record. 
    This was a seasonal departure of +2.8  F. 
    The Airport had a -3.4 inch snow deficit for the month and 6.2 inch deficit for the winter.

    MARCH 2013 SUMMARY
    Glen Allen Summary March 2013
      March was the coolest and second wettest on record at Glen Allen as the monthly mean temperature was 42.0  F, 
    a -9.0  F departure based on a 4 year average. 
     March’s average was 4.8  F cooler than any of the other March months and 16.3  F cooler than March 2012.  
    The 5.54 inches of precipitation for March was a +1.40 inch departure on the 4 year average.  
    The maximum rainfall recorded in a day was 2.24 inches on the 6th.  
    The most precipitation in a 24 hour period was 2.62 inches which was also a new record for March. 
    This record was 0.84 inches more than the previous record set in 2010. 
    The total snowfall was 9.6 inches for the month a new record for March. 
    The previous record was 9.5 inches recorded in 2009 which was a +6.7 inch departure. 
    We had lightning seven times during the morning snow and sleet storm of March 6th. 
    Glen Allen had 21 days the minimum temperature was <=32  F; last year had only 3 days and the previous record was 9 days.
     The highest of the minimum temperatures for the month was 47  F which was 6  F below the previous record set in 2011. 
    The maximum temperature for March was 71 degrees F on the 12th and in 2012 Glen Allen had 6 days that the maximum temperature was 80  F or more. 
     The maximum wind gust during March was 35 mph which occurred on the 6th at 1714 hours from the NNE.
     A bolide  meteor was seen at about 1954 in ne sky-it started out white about 3/4 size of the moon with a white tail almost looking like a comet 
    and quickly faded to a deep green and dimmed rapidly as it faded below the horizon-all this took place in about 3 seconds.

    The average maximum temperature for March was 53.6  F; only 13 years were colder since 1880. 
    Last year March’s average maximum temperature was the second warmest.
     The average minimum temperature for March was 33.2  F; only 25 years were colder since 1880. 
    The mean temperature for March was 43.4  F and only 20 years were colder since 1880. 
    The mean temperature for March was -5.2  F below the 30 year mean temperature for March. 
    This March had 2 days that the high temperature was greater than or equal to 70  F but 2012 had 19 days. 
     This March had 12 days that the temperature was 32  F or less; last year it was only 3 days.
     The only daily March record was a record high precipitation amount for March 6 which is now 2.10 inches. 
     The previous record was 1.75 inches set in 1932. 
    The total precipitation for March was 5.57 inches and only 21 years have had more precipitation in March since 1872. 
    The total snow for March was 5.3 inches only 17 years had more snow in March. 
    Only 7 years since 1872 have had more precipitation in one day in March than the 2.10 inches of precipitation that occurred on March 6th. 
    The highest overnight minimum for the month was 44  F on the 31st and only 3 March months have had a lower temperature.

APRIL
    APRIL 2013 SUMMARY
    West Henrico Co. - Glen Allen
    April was slightly cooler than average by 0.1 F. The monthly mean temperature for April was 59.2 F. April was wetter than average with a total of 3.20 inches, a departure of +0.58 inches based on the average of the past 4 years. The maximum rainfall recorded in a day was 0.81 inches on the 19th. Measurable precipitation occurred on only 9 days. The high temperature for April was 90 F on the 10th which was a new record for the date for Glen Allen and for the Richmond International Airport which had a high of 91 F. The lowest minimum was 26 F recorded on the 3rd. There were a total of four days with frost. The lowest daily mean of 39.5 F occurred on the 4th and that was a new record low for Glen Allen. The average ground temperature of 56.7 at one foot depth was also the lowest on record for April. The maximum wind gust was 33 mph from the SSW that occurred on the 19th at 1540. April was a windy month with a total wind run of 2521 miles the second highest on record. The highest barometer recorded for the month was 30.55 inches on the 21st which was the second highest maximum pressure recorded at this station for April. The lowest barometric pressure was 29.56 inches on the 12th which is the highest minimum pressure recorded at this station for April. Richmond
    The Airport had 91 F which was the highest maximum temperature for April on the 10th and a new record for the date; the previous record was 88 F in 1922. Only 27 years (5 of the 27 occurred before 1897) in the past 133 years recorded a higher maximum. Two new record high daily mean temperatures were set on April 10th and 12th. The highest daily mean was on the 10th at 78.0 F of which only 12 years (1 of the 12 occurred before 1897) have been higher in April when considering all 30 days. The lowest minimum temperature at the Airport was 30 F on the 3rd. The highest minimum temperature of 67 F occurred on the 12th which was a record for the date. Only 3 years have had a higher minimum temperature; they were 2010, 1896, and 1922 that holds the record at 69 F. The average minimum for April was 48.3 F which was a +2.2 F departure and only 14 years were higher in the past 133 years. The Richmond International Airport’s April mean temperature was 59.8 F which was a departure of +1.6 F and was the 25th warmest April since 1880. Their precipitation total was 2.88 inches which was a departure of -0.39 inches making April the 71st driest April in the past 142 years.
MAY
    MAY 2013 SUMMARY
    May was the coolest May on record and averaged 4.6  F cooler than May last year 
    as the monthly mean temperature was 65.7  F, a negative 3.4  F departure. 
    May was above average in precipitation when compared to Glen Allen’s 4 year average. 
    The maximum temperature for May was 89  F on the 30th and 31st and the minimum was 36  F 
    on the 14th causing a light patchy frost our first May frost. 
      May 2013 had more wind than any other May on record with a wind run of 2,165 miles. 
    The windiest day was May 15th with a wind run of 152.6 miles. 
    However the maximum wind gust for May was only 28 mph. May was just a little cleaner than average.
    The 4.85 inches of precipitation for May was a +0.87 inch departure when compared to the average. 
    May had 2.39 inches of rain in a local thunderstorm on May 7th which set a new daily record for May. 
    This was the most rain to fall in one hour here since August 24, 2009 when 1.44 inches was recorded.
     It also set a new May hourly record of 1.37 inches, a new 15 minute record of 0.67 inches 
    and a new 5 minute record of 0.33 inches. 
    May had 12 days with measurable rainfall.

    May 7th thunderstorm with hail – A small cell rapidly intensified into a slow moving thunderstorm.
     Light rain started at 1715 and heavy rain started between 1735 and 1740 
    and hail occurred around 1740-1745. 
    Hail was small pea size and milky (not clear) with the largest being 3/.8 inches in diameter. 
    This left the deck about 50 percent covered by a layer of small hail during a period of heavy rain. 
    The hail then started again about 1758 and was larger marble size (0.5 inches) 
    with a milky center but clear ice on the outside layer. 
     Most were rounded but some had a platelet shape and this second 3-4 minutes of hail damaged garden plants.
    The Spring Season ave. was cooler by -4.2 and wetter by +0.95 inches than average. (4 Yr. Ave.)

JUNE
    JUNE 2013 SUMMARY
    June was the wettest June on record at the Glen Allen station.
     The 6.52 inches monthly precipitation was a departure of 3.58 inches.
     The mean temperature was -1.2  F below average for the past four years but remember
     two of these years were in the top five of the warmest in recorded history of the Richmond area. 
    June was our wettest month since August of 2011 when 6.65 inches was recorded. 
    Only three months have been wetter at this station since records were started in August of 2009.
     The Richmond International Airport had 6.50 inches and was their wettest June since 2006 
    when 7.85 inches was recorded.
    Glen Allen had 16 days in June with   precipitation which sets a new record for June;
     the previous record was 14 days. 
    The maximum precipitation recorded in a day was 1.79 inches on the 7th.
      Thunder was heard on eight days during June tying the record but none of these storms were severe here. 
    June was the second cloudiest month on record with an average relative humidity of 72.7 % 
    a new maximum record for June.
     This was the highest monthly average relative humidity since September of 2011. 
    These factors helped in giving June the lowest temperature range on record at Glen Allen.   
     The lowest dew point temperature for June was 41.4  F on the 4th and 
    the highest dew point was 76.5  F on the 25th.  
    On June 13th and 28th the barometric pressure was 29.51 inches which is 
    a new record minimum for the month of June. (Records since 2009)  
    The total wind run for June was 1951 miles which was a new maximum record for June 
    as were the daily average and daily maximum. 
    The maximum wind for the month was only 31 mph on the 28th from the SSW at 1650.
                The Richmond International Airport had 6.50 inches of precipitation for June. 
    Only 9 Junes have been wetter since 1872 and the June record is 9.93 inches in 2004.
     The greatest one day precipitation amount this month was on the 7th with 2.67 inches
     which was a record for the date. 
    Only 11 Junes have had greater precipitation amounts for a day in the past 141 years.    
    The Richmond International Airport reported the mean temperature for June of 76.7  F.  
    Only 11 years have been warmer since 1897. 
    The average minimum 67.1  F ranked even higher with only 5 years with a higher average 
    since 1897 due to higher relative humidity and cloudiness this month.  
     The lowest minimum temperature for June was 57  F on the 5th and 
    only four Junes have had a higher monthly minimum temperature.
    The record is 63  F in 1943.
    
    


JULY
    JULY 2013 SUMMARY
               July was the wettest July on record at the Glen Allen station. 
    The 7.03 inches monthly precipitation was a departure of +3.24 inches.
      The mean temperature was -1.4  F below average for the past five years but remember 
    three of these years were in the top five of the warmest in recorded history of the Richmond area.
     July was our wettest month since December of 2009 when 8.44 inches was recorded. 
    Only two months have been wetter at this station since records were started in August of 2009. 
    Rainfall amounts varied greatly over the area and the Richmond International Airport had only 5.88 inches. 
    This was their wettest July since 2005 when 9.28 inches was recorded and was the 40th wettest
     July in the past 141 years.
            Glen Allen had 15 days in July with measurable precipitation which sets a new record for July;
     the previous record was only 12 days. 
    The maximum precipitation recorded in a day and for 24 hours was 2.42 inches on the 3rd both new records for July.
     Thunder was heard on only 4 days during July the least on record for July and only one storm on the 10th had much lightning.
     July was the cloudiest July on record with the highest average relative humidity of 78.9 % for July. 
    This was the fifth highest monthly average relative humidity of the 61 months since this station was started.
     These factors helped in giving July the lowest temperature range on record at Glen Allen. 
      The lowest dew point temperature for July was 56.9  F on the 25th and the highest dew point was 80.1  F
    on the 18th; the five year record is 80.9  F. 
     The average barometric pressure for July was 30.06 inches which is ironically a new record maximum for the month of July.
     The total wind run for July was 1679.4 miles which was a new maximum record for July as were the daily average and daily maximum. 
                The Richmond International Airport greatest one day precipitation amount this month was on the 10th 
    with 1.84 inches which was a record for the date. 
    The Richmond International Airport reported the following average temperatures and departures from the 30 year average. 
    The ave. maximum 88.9  F dep.-0.8  F, ave. min.72.1  F dep. +3.2  F, and mean of 80.5  F dep. +1.2  F.
     Because of the higher relative humidity and cloudiness this month, the days were a little cooler and
     the nights were warmer giving a very low average temperature range of only 16.8  F. 
    Only four Julys since 1897 have had a lower average daily temperature range! 
    It is also surprising that the average minimum temperature has been warmer only twice since 1897 and three times since 1880. 
     This month’s mean temperature of 80.5  F has been warmer only 16 times since 1897 and 19 times since 1880.
           Three daily records were set in July. 
    One was for precipitation on the 10th already mentioned and two high daily minimum temperatures
     on the 19th with a new record of 77  F; the previous record was 75  F in 1918. 
    On the 20th the minimum of 78  F set a new record; the previous record was 68  F in 1937.
    
    


AUGUST
    AUGUST 2013 SUMMARY- West Henrico Co. - Glen Allen, VA area
    August was far from the norm as it was the coolest, cloudiest and most humid, most days with rain and the second wettest in the past five years. 
    The monthly mean temperature was 74.6  F, a -3.7  F mean temperature departure based on a five-year average. 
    The 6.20 inches of rain for August was a +1.38 inch departure based on a five-year average and the second wettest August on record.
     The most intense rainfall records were broken on the 10th when 0.16 inches fell in one minute, 0.67 inches 
    in 5 minutes, and 1.07 inches occurred in 15 minutes. 
     Precipitation occurred on 14 days, the greatest number of days on record for August.  
    	         The maximum temperature for August was only 92 F on the 9th.  
    On 4 days the maximum temperature was greater than or equal to 90  F; this is the lowest number for August. 
     The lowest minimum was only 56  F recorded on the 16th and 26th and both were new records for Glen Allen. 
    The lowest maximum was 68  F on the 18th; the previous low was 70  F set in 2008. 
    The maximum wind gust was 37 mph from the NNW that occurred on the 10th at 1337 hours.
           Before drawing too many conclusions between these tables, note Glen Allen has a five-year average
     and the Richmond International Airport uses a 30-year average. 
    This summer was much cooler than the past five years some of which have been record breaking for heat like 2010 and 2011.
    This summer was more humid at the Glen Allen Station than any of the past five years by 7.2 percent.
     June, July, and August all set new high relative humidity records. Note July had a +9 percent departure;
     this explains why my tomatoes did so poorly and the Septoria (a fungus disease) had its way with my tomatoes.
     It was the worst tomato crop in my past five years in Glen Allen.
     
    AUGUST 2013 SUMMARY- Richmond International Airport, VA
     The Richmond International Airport (KRIC) had 7.72 inches of rain for August; 
    only 27 years have had a wetter August in the past 141 years.
    It was the greatest rainfall total for August since 2004 which holds the August record rainfall total of 16.30 inches.
    The Richmond International Airport had an August mean temperature of 75.9  F the coolest since 2004 
    which was also the wettest August on record because of the remnants of Hurricane Gaston.
     In the past 116 years, only 51 Augusts have been cooler. The Richmond International Airport tied only one record for the date. 
     On Aug. 18th, the lowest maximum temperature for the date was 70  F set in 1918 which 
    was tied and only 24 years of the past 116 have had a lower August temperature. 
     The Richmond International Airport also set a new low temperature range record on the 18th of 4  F; 
    the previous record was 5  F in 1989.
     In the past 116 years only 3 days in August have had a lower temperature range than 4  F which occurred in 1971, 1996, and 1956. 
     In the past 116 years only 26 Augusts have had a lower average maximum temperature. 
    The August highest maximum was 93  F on the 9th and only 17 years have had lower maximum temperature since 1897.
     August’s lowest minimum temperature was 57  F on the 26th which was the lowest August temperature since August 7, 2004.
     Richmond had 0.35 inches more rainfall than Glen Allen for the summer 
    and Richmond International Airport temperatures averaged 1.3  F more than Glen Allen for the summer. 
     If one averages the mean temperatures for the Airport for the past five years the average is 79.0  F.

SEPTEMBER
    SEPTEMBER 2013 SUMMARY
               September was the coolest and driest September on record at Glen Allen. 
    The monthly mean temperature was 68.8  F, a -2.7  F departure based on the five year average; 
    the previous record was in 2009 with a 69.2  F mean temperature.
     The maximum temperature for September was 93  F on the 11th and only in 2012 was it lower at 91  F. 
    The lowest minimum was 44  F recorded on the 18th that was a new record low by -2  F for September (records since 2008). 
    There were 5 nights the temperature fell into the 40’s and the previous greatest number was only 3. 
    The average minimum temperature was 57.9 which was the also the lowest on record for September. 
    This occurred because of many clear night skies. 
    This was not only the clearest September but the clearest month ever recorded at Glen Allen. (Records since 2008)
              This was the driest September on record at Glen Allen with only 1.52 inches of precipitation 
    and was the driest month since November of 2012. 
     There were only 5 days with measurable precipitation.
     There were no strong storms and the lowest barometric pressure was only 29.72 inches 
    on the 13th which was a new record high minimum pressure for the month.
      The maximum wind gust for the month was 21 mph on the 13th and 21st which was the least on record at Glen Allen for September.
    
    Richmond International Airport
    	The Richmond International Airport’s mean temperature was 70.8  F which was the 55th warmest 
    September since 1897.
     The Airport had only four days with measurable rainfall. Only eight years have had less precipitation days since 1887. 
    It was also the driest September since 2007 and only 23 years have been drier since 1887. 
    No daily records were set at the Airport this month.
      
    
    


OCTOBER
    OCTOBER 2013 SUMMARY
    West Henrico Co. - Glen Allen, VA  
              October at Glen Allen was very warm and a little drier than average when compared to the five year average. 
    The monthly mean temperature was 60.2  F a +1.0  F departure when compared to the five year average; 
    only 2010 was warmer.  
    The average minimum temperature of 50.5  F was a new five year record for Glen Allen. 
    There were 6 days the maximum was 80  F or more. 
    The minimum temperature on the 26th of 28  F was the lowest minimum ever recorded here in October. 
    The maximum temperature on October 5th of 90  F was the highest maximum ever recorded here in October. 
    The 3  F daily temperature range on the 9th and 10th tied the record low for October. 
    The lowest dew point temperature for October was 24.5  F on the 25th at 1707 
    tied for the lowest dew point temperature on record for October. 
    The 2.88 inches of precipitation for October at Glen Allen was a -1.02 inch departure.  
    The maximum wind gust was 29 mph from the SSW that occurred on the 7th at 1159 ahead of a cold front.  
    
    
    Richmond International Airport
          The Richmond data base recorded two daily records this month. 
    The high precipitation amount of 1.44 inches fell on October 9th; this was a new daily record since 1872.
     The previous record was 1.02 inches set in 1996. 
     The 4  F temperature range also on the 9th tied the 116 year record set in 1952 
    for the lowest temperature range for the date.
     Only 15 years have had a lower daily temperature range in October since 1897. 
    The mean temperature was 62.6  F which tied for the tenth warmest October since 1897. 
    The highest October temperature was 92  F recorded on October 5th. 
    Only five Octobers in the past 116 years have had a higher temperature. 
    The record is 99  F recorded in 1941. The average minimum temperature was 53.0  F.  
    Only 6 years were higher than this in the past 116 years.
     The Richmond International Airport recorded 4.25 inches of rain for October making it the 32nd wettest since 1887.  
    The Airport and eastern areas of Virginia received much higher rain totals on the 9th and 10th 
    from a low pressure that formed on a cold front just off the VA coast.
     The Airport’s 30 year average is 2.98 inches thus their departure is a positive 1.27 inches.
    
    


NOVEMBER
    NOVEMBER 2013 SUMMARY
    This November was the second coldest on record (records since 2008) as the monthly mean temperature was 46.4  F,
     a -3.1  F mean temperature departure when compared with Glen Allen’s five year average.
     Precipitation for Nov. was 3.68 inches which was a departure of only -0.46 inches.
     It was a dry month until the 2.80 inches of precipitation that occurred on the 26th and 27th.   
    The maximum temperature for November was 73  F on the 2nd. The lowest minimum was 17  F recorded on the 25th. 
    There were 12 days the minimum temperature was less than or equal to 32  F.  
    The highest barometric pressure ever recorded in November was 30.69 inches on the 29th and 30th 
    which was also the highest since March 6, 2012 when it was 30.71 inches. 
    The average daily pressure for the month was the highest on record with 30.21 inches;
     the previous record was 30.18 inches in Nov. 2012.
     The predominance of high-pressure was associated with the unusually dry month until the low pressure of the 26th and 27th.
     The lowest dew point for the month was 0.7  F on the 24th which was more than 7  F below the previous record low dew point.
      Glen Allen recorded both the highest daily mean temperature on record for November on the first 
    and the lowest daily mean on record for November on the 25th.   
    
    
    Richmond International Airport data:
    
          Richmond had 3.06 inches of rain, the 51st wettest Nov. of the past 116 after the heavy rain of the 25th & 26th.
     The Airport’s mean temperature for Nov. was 46.7  F which was the 50th coolest Nov. since 1897. 
    Only Nov. 1971 had a higher minimum temperature than Richmond’s highest minimum temperature this month 
    which was 67  F on the first day. 
     The daily mean temperature for November 1st only had 8 years in the past 116 years with a higher average daily mean in Nov. 
    The daily mean temperature for the 25th was 29  F; only 16 Novembers had a lower daily mean temperature. 
    One daily record was set for Richmond during November as the 67  F minimum on the first tied the 1971 record for the date.
     A 20  F minimum was recorded on the 25th; only 22 years of 116 years had a lower minimum recorded in November. 
    The Nov. mean of 48.7 had 66 years that were warmer in the past 116 years.

DECEMBER
  • DECEMBER 2013 SUMMARY
    West Henrico Co. - Glen Allen, VA area
            December was a wet and warm month as the monthly mean temperature was 43.3  F, 
    a +2.2  F departure and the precipitation had a +1.22 inch departure from the five year Glen Allen average.  
    The warmest December day had a 73  F maximum at Glen Allen on December 22nd. 
     A new record December maximum dew point temperature of 67.0  F also occurred on the 22nd.
     The lowest temperature was 18  F occurring on Christmas Day making it the coldest Christmas Day at Glen Allen on record.
     December had only 0.1 inches of frozen precipitation as sleet on the 8th.  
    The precipitation total was 5.80 inches making it the second wettest December and the wettest year at Glen Allen with a 54.54 inch total.  
    There were 12 days with measurable precipitation, with 8 consecutive days of measurable precipitation, in the first ten days of the month.  
    Glen Allen also had 8.5 days without any sunshine the first ten days of the month but 
    December was only the 3rd cloudiest on record because of sunny days in the last 2/3 of December.
    
    The Richmond International Airport
    The mean temperature for the Richmond International Airport was 43.8  F 
    which made December the 18th warmest in the past 116 years. 
    There were three daily records set this month and two were set on December 22 for both 
    the maximum (76 F) and minimum (62 F) being record highs for the date.
    Only 1951 had a higher minimum temperature of 63  F in the past 116 years for any December date. 
    Only nine Decembers in the past 116 years have had a higher monthly maximum temperature.
    The daily mean for the 22nd was 69 F. Only three years have had a day this warm in December;
     they were: 1998, 1971, and 1951 in the past 116 years. 
    On December 8th a new record low temperature range was set of only 3  F; 
    the previous record was 5  F in 1973, 1969, and 1920. 
    Richmond’s December minimum temperature was 21  F on the 26th. 
    Only in 9 years of the past 116 years has this been higher. 
    December had only a trace of snow; the 30-year average snowfall for December is 2.1 inches. 
    The 6.11 inches of precipitation for December was +2.85 inch departure for the month 
    and only 5 Decembers of the past 116 years have been wetter.  
    The Richmond International Airport’s total precipitation for the year was 53.68 inches which makes it the 12th wettest in the past 141 years. 
    This is a 10.08 inch surplus of precipitation for 2013 based on the 30 year average of 43.60 inches.
