THE YEAR 2012
    JANUARY 2012 SUMMARY
    January was much warmer than average as the monthly mean temperature was 42.1  F, 
    a  7.2  F departure based on the past three year average and the warmest since 2007.
     There were 19 days the temperature was 50  F or above. 
    January had only 18 days the minimum temperature was 32  F or lower and the maximum 
    temperature rose above freezing all 31 days of the month; both are new records for January. 
    The 1.95 inches of precipitation for January was a -0.82 inch departure 
    when compared to the past three year average. 
    The month had 10 days with precipitation.       
    The maximum temperature for January was 71  F on January 27th. 
    January also had a temperature range of 22.7  F which was caused in part by the clear month. 
    This January was the clearest January on record at Glen Allen (Records since August 2008). 
    The average temperature range at the Richmond International Airport was 21.6  F 
    the highest since 1990 when it was 21.9  F.
    Glen Allen’s lowest minimum temperature was 15  F which was recorded on the 4th 
    which was the coldest reading since January 23, 2011 when it was 13  F. 
    The lowest barometric pressure of the month was 29.38 inches and recorded on the 13th 
    and the highest was only 30.61 inches on January 16th.   
    The maximum wind gust for the month was 41 mph SSE that occurred on the 17th of the month at 1208
     and made for the windiest day (wind run was 247.0 miles) since August 27th 
    and hurricane Irene when a 284.1 mile wind run occurred.  
    This is also the windiest January on record at the Glen Allen Station. (Records since August 2008).
    The Richmond International Airport set only one daily record for the month.
    On January 6th the 37  F temperature range set a new record for the date. 
    The previous record was 35  F set in 1929. 
    The January mean temperature of 42.7  F was the 20th warmest in the past 132 years. 
    January was the 22nd driest of the past 125 years. 
    No measurable snow fell at the Richmond International Airport this past January 
    which has occurred only 26 times in the last 114 years.
           
    
FEBRUARY
    FEBRUARY 2012 SUMMARY
    February was much warmer than average as the monthly mean temperature was 44.3  F, a +3.7  F departure.  
    As warm as February has been at the Glen Allen Station, it is surprising that last February was a little warmer.   
    There were 18 days the minimum temperature dropped below freezing and 0 days that the maximum didn’t climb above freezing. 
    The 3.36 inches of rain for February was a +1.32 inch departure when compared to the three year average.  
    February of 2011 had a -1.47 inch deficit in precipitation. 
    The maximum rainfall recorded in a day was 1.38 inches on the 29th which was the greatest daily rainfall since December 7, 2011.
    Measurable precipitation occurred on 13 days but was light except for the 19th and 29th when 66% of the month’s precipitation occurred.
    The total frozen precipitation was 5.2 inches for the month recorded on the 11th, 19th, 20th giving a negative 0.2 inch departure. 
    The 0.5 inch snow on the 11th was associated with a thunder snow from the passage of a strong cold front. 
    It was Glen Allen’s first thunder snow. (Records since August 2008)
    The maximum temperature for February was 81  F on the 24th and the Richmond International Airport also had 81  F 
    which was only 2  F from the highest temperature on record since 1897 for February. 
    There have been only four days in Richmond’s recorded history with higher temperatures. (daily records since 1897)  
    The lowest minimum this month at West Henrico Co. - Glen Allen was 18  F recorded on the 12th and 13th. 
    The maximum wind gust was 46 mph from the south that occurred on Feb. 24th at 1503 hours. 
    This occurred in a thundershower preceding a cold frontal passage and was the strongest wind since Irene on August 27th, 
    2011 and set a new record wind speed for February. 
    The highest barometer recorded for the month was 30.52 inches on the 3rd and the lowest was 29.33 inches on the 24th.  
    The winter has been very mild as December was the 8th warmest, 
    January was the 20th warmest, and February tied for the 16th warmest month since 1881. 
     The winter tied for the fourth warmest winter since the beginning of mean temperature records in 1881.

MARCH
    MARCH 2012 SUMMARY
    March was the warmest and driest on record at Glen Allen as the monthly mean temperature was 58.2  F, a 9.7  F departure.  
    The 2.31 inches of precipitation for March was a -2.44 inch departure.  
    The maximum rainfall recorded in a day was 0.68 inches on the 24th. 
    The total snowfall was only 1.7 inches for the month recorded on the 5th witch was a -1.7 inch departure. 
    This March at the Richmond International Airport was +0.1  F warmer than the 30 year mean temperature for April. 
    Glen Allen had only 3 days the minimum temperature dropped below freezing and 6 days that the maximum temperature was 80  F or more.  
    The maximum temperature for March was 85 degrees F on the 15th and 23rd.
     The maximum wind gust of 35 mph occurred on the 8th at 1551 hours from the SSW.
    The lowest barometric pressure was 29.53 inches on the 3rd and the highest pressure was 30.71 inches on the 6th 
    which was the highest since December 24, 2009 when it was also 30.71 inches. 
     
                                   RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT RECORDS IN THE FOLLOWING SECTION – 
                                  When a month is so much above average as this March, three years of records at this Glen Allen 
                                    Station, mean little so the longer 115 year Richmond data base was used for comparison.
    
    1.	The average maximum temperature for March was 69.9  F with only March 1945 being warmer 
    	with 71.0  F in the past 115 years.
    2.	The average minimum temperature for March was 46.7 F which is now the 115 year record for March. 
    	The average minimum in 1945 was 46.2 degrees F.
    3.	The mean temperature was 58.3  F which was only 0.2  F from the warmest March on record in 1945 with 58.5  F. 
    	The mean temperature for March was 9.7  F above the 30 year mean temperature for March and
     	was +0.1  F warmer than the 30 year mean temperature for April.
    4.	This March had 19 days that the high temperature was greater than or equal to 70  F 
    	which tied the 115 year record with 19 days in 1945. Richmond had 8 days of greater than or equal to 80  F; 
    	only 1945 had more with a total of ten days.
    5.	This March had only 3 days that the temperature was 32  F or less; the ave. is 10.5 days. 
    	Only 3 Marches in the past 115 years had less. (1945,1921,1903)
    6.	Two daily March records were broken - the record high temperature for March 15 is now 86  F.  
    	The previous record was 82  F in 2007 and 1972.
    7.	On March 25th the second daily record was tied with the low daily temperature range of 4  F which also occurred 1965.
    8.	Only 13 Marches in the past 115 years have had a maximum temperature for March higher than the 86  F.
    9.	March, with 2.51 inches of precipitation, was the 35th driest in the past 125 years.
    10.	On March 28th a daily temperature range of 41  F occurred that was only 1  F shy of the record set in 1960.  
    
    

APRIL
    APRIL 2012 SUMMARY
    April was cooler than March by 2.5  F. 
    The monthly mean temperature for April was 55.7  F. 
    April was wetter than average and had a departure of +0.62 inches based on the average of the past 3 years.
    However there was no measurable rain for the first 17 days of the month.  
    All of the precipitation for April fell in 12 days during the last half of the month. 
    The maximum rainfall recorded in a day was 1.44 inches on the 22nd.
    Measurable precipitation occurred on only 8 days. 
    The high temperature for April was 88  F on the 16th and there were 3 days that the temperature was 85  F or higher. 
    The lowest minimum was 33  F recorded on the 12th and frost killed some of my neighbor’s plants. 
    There were four other mornings with very light scattered frost but no plants were harmed. 
    The maximum wind gust was only 31 mph from the north that occurred on the 5th at 0023.  
    The highest barometer recorded for the month was 30.30 inches on the 28th 
    which was the lowest maximum pressure recorded at this station for April. 
    The lowest barometric pressure was 29.38 inches on the 23rd 
    which is the highest minimum pressure recorded at this station for April.
    Richmond International Airport
    The Airport had 90  F which was the highest maximum temperature for April on the 16th 
    and the daily mean temperature for the 16th of 76.5  F tied with 2002 for the highest mean for the date.  
    The lowest minimum temperature at the airport was 36  F on the 24th and 25th that tied for 2nd place.
     Only 1901 and 1929 had a higher April monthly minimum temperature. 
    Their April mean temperature was 58.5  F which was a departure of +0.3  F 
    and was the 42nd warmest April since 1880 although it was still the coolest April since 2007. 
    For comparison, last year was the 7th warmest April with a mean temperature of 61.8  F and 
    2010 was the fourth warmest April since 1880 with a mean temperature of 62.2  F. 
    Their precipitation total was 2.40 inches which was a departure of -0.87 inches. 
    April was the 40th driest April in the past 125 years. 
    The greatest April precipitation in one day was 1.59 inches on the 22nd. 
    This ranked as the 19th greatest daily precipitation in the past 125 Aprils. 
           
    
MAY
    MAY 2012 SUMMARY
          May was the warmest and second driest on record at Glen Allen as the monthly mean temperature was 70.3  F, a +1.6  F departure. 
     The average maximum, minimum and mean temperatures for May were all record highs. 
    The maximum temperature for May was 88 degrees F on the 2nd, 27th, and 29th.  
    This May had 17 days that the high temperature was greater than 80  F.
    +  What made the average temperature for May so high was the lack of cool days. 
    The lowest maximum temperature in May was only 72  F; the average is 64.0  F.
     The 3.57 inches of precipitation for May was a negative 0.55 inch departure 
    even though a measurable amount of rain fell on 15 days the maximum record number of days for May.
     This also made May the second cloudiest May with the highest average relative humidity for the month.  
    The maximum rainfall recorded in a day was 1.38 inches on the 22nd. 
    	 	
    
    RICHMOND   RECORDS IN THE FOLLOWING SECTION –
    1. The mean temperature was 70.5  F which was the 8th warmest May. 
     The mean temperature for May was +4.1  F above the 30 year mean temperature of 66.4  F.
    2. Only one daily May record was noted - the record low temperature was 70  F 
    which tied the previous daily record for the 29th set in 1908 and 1959.  
    3. May, with 2.45 inches of precipitation, was the 27th driest in the past 125 years.
    4. The lowest daily temperature range in May was 12  F on May 30th which tied for 
    7th place in the past 115 years. The average is 7.7  F and the record is 17  F on May 13, 1937.
    5. The average minimum temperature was a mild 60.1  F which tied for third place. 
    The 30 year average for May is 55  F.
    6. The lowest May minimum temperature was a mild 47  F on the 12th. 
    This is very high minimum for May and rated the 5th highest in the past 115 years.
     The record is 31  F.
    7. The lowest May maximum was 72  F on the 10th and 11th.  
    This too was very high for a low maximum for May and rated the 5th highest in the past 115 years. 
    The record is 74  F set in 1991.
    8. Richmond had its warmest spring in 2012 with a mean temperature of 62.4  F.  
    The second warmest was 2010 with 61.5  F, 3rd warmest was 1945 with 61.3  F.
    9. Richmond’s spring precipitation was less than average. 
        (Mar. 2.51, Apr. 2.40, May 2.45 equals 7.36) 
    The season’s 30 year average is 11.09. Departure=-3.73 inches.

JUNE
    JUNE 2012 SUMMARY
              June was the coolest June on record at the Glen Allen station. 
    The monthly mean temperature had a departure of -4.0  F and was below average in precipitation by 0.27 inches.  
    Remember June of 2010 was the hottest on record at the Richmond International Airport and is in this three year average. 
    (Records since August 2008)
    There were only 4 days in June with maximum temperatures of 90  F or more. 
     However, the 102  F recorded on the 29th was the highest temperature ever recorded at this station for June. 
    The maximum precipitation recorded in a day was 1.11 inches on the 25th in a severe thunderstorm when 0.47 inches fell in five minutes 
    which was the most intense precipitation since June 3, 2009 when 0.48 inches fell in 5 minutes. 
    The thunderstorm of the 25th was small and severe.
     It had small hail of 0.25 to 0.33 inches which lasted for about one minute.
     The storm had 47 mph winds the highest wind speed of 2012 but much higher winds were in the news of 60 to 80 mph. 
    However the storm didn’t have much lightning.  
    Wind damage was the main destruction and many trees were broken off not like Irene when most were uprooted. 
    We were also lucky on the night of the 29th as a derecho traveled over 450 miles from the Chicago area 
    with winds to 80 mph in places like the Roanoke Airport but weakened just west of Henrico.
     Thunder was heard on eight days during June but the 25th was the only severe storm here. 
    The maximum temperature for June was 102  F on the 29th a new record June maximum temperature for Glen Allen.  
    June was the clearest on record with an average relative humidity of 61.6 % only 1 % from being the lowest on record for June.
     These factors helped in giving June the greatest temperature range on record at Glen Allen.   
     The lowest dew point temperature for June was 45.7  F on the 26th at 0225 and the highest dew point was 78.3  F on the 21st at 1452. 
                The Richmond International Airport had 103  F on the 29th setting a new record for the date. 
    Only one day in the Richmond records was hotter for the month of June which was June 26th, 1952 when a 104  F observation was taken. 
    They also tied the record high maximum temperature of 98  F on the 20th which occurred in 1933.    
    The Richmond International Airport reported the mean temperature for June of 74.1  F which was their coolest June since 2003 with a mean of 72.7  F.  
     Their 4.27 inches of precipitation rated 52nd place in the past 142 years.
    
    


JULY
    JULY 2012 SUMMARY
     July was extremely hot not only the hottest here but the Richmond International Airport had a monthly mean temperature of 82.7  F only 
    0.1  F less than their 132 year record set in 2010. 
    The July mean temperature here was 82.7  F which was 0.7  F warmer than our July 2010. 
    There were 26 days that the minimum temperature was 70 F or greater and in 2010 only 23 days were recorded.
     The average minimum temperature this year was 72.1  F which was 1.3  F higher than in 2010.  
    July had 22 days with 90  F, 15 days of 95  F, and 5 days of 100  F or more at Glen Allen. 
    The maximum temperature for July was 105  F recorded on July 8th which is the highest maximum temperature ever recorded here. 
     The 80  F minimum temperature recorded on the 6th was the highest minimum temperature ever recorded at the Glen Allen Station.
     Also the lowest temperature recorded this July was 67  F; this was 6  F higher than for any other Julys.
     The warmest day was July 8th with a daily mean of 91.5  F; the warmest day in July 2010 was 90.5  F.
    The 2.61 inches of rainfall for July was a -1.58 inch departure and the driest July for Glen Allen. 
    It was the first July in the past four years of not having a day with at least one inch rainfall, however measurable rain fell on 12 days. 
    Thunder was heard on 9 days. 
     The Richmond International Airport received much more precipitation than Glen Allen and had 5.29 inches,
     the 45th wettest July in the past 125 years.  
    The Richmond International Airport had a July average temperature of 82.7  F being lower by only 0.1  F than the 2010 record 
    and a 3.4  F departure from the 30 year average. 
    It is interesting that of the top six hottest July months five of these came from 2005 to 2012. 
    (2010 82.8  F,   2012 82.7  F,   1993 82.4  F,   2011 82.0  F,   2005 81.7  F,   2006 81.5  F)
    The July average minimum temperature was 72.7  F which is the warmest in the past 115 years and was 2.0 F warmer than the July minimum average in 2010. 
    The lowest temperature in July at the Airport was 66  F; only once in the past 115 years has it been higher as 67  F was recorded in 1994.
    
    Seven daily records were broken or tied at the Richmond International Airport.

AUGUST
    AUGUST 2012 SUMMARY
    August was just a little cooler than average as the monthly mean temperature was 77.8  F, a +0.6  F 
    mean temperature departure based on a three-year average, and was wetter than average.  
    This was the coolest August since 1968. 
    The 4.88 inches of rain for August was a +0.07 inch departure based on a three-year average and
     the wettest month since September of 2011 when 6.51 inches was recorded. 
     It was also the 2nd wettest August on record. (Records since July of 2008). 
    The maximum rainfall recorded in a day was 1.35 inches on the 2nd and measurable precipitation 
    occurred on 13 days, the greatest on record for August.  
    The maximum temperature for August was 95 F on the 31st.  
    On 12 days the maximum temperature was greater than or equal to 90  F. 
     The lowest minimum was only 63  F recorded on the 16th and 22nd. 
    The maximum wind gust was 33 mph from the SSW that occurred on the 2nd at 1556 hrs 
     The Richmond International Airport (KRIC) had only 3.50 inches of rain for August,
     the 85th wettest August in the past 140 years.
      KRIC had an August mean temperature of 78.2  F which was the 34th warmest August in the past 132 years.  
    They tied only one record for the date.  On Aug. 5th, the highest minimum temperature for the date
     was 75  F, which tied with 1989 and 1915.  
     Before drawing too many conclusions between these tables, note Glen Allen has a three-year average 
    and the Richmond International Airport has a 30-year average.
     The KRIC had 2.83 inches more precipitation than Glen Allen and averaged 0.3  F warmer. 
     However, in August KRIC had 1.38 inches less precipitation than Glen Allen.

SEPTEMBER
    SEPTEMBER 2012 SUMMARY
    September was cooler and much drier than average as the monthly mean temperature was 70.2  F, 
    a -1.5  F departure based on my four year average and the coolest September since 2009 with a 69.2  F mean temperature. 
    The maximum temperature for September was 91  F on the 2nd and the lowest minimum was 46  F
     recorded on the 24th that was a new record low for September (records since 2008). 
    The average minimum temperature was 59.5 was also the lowest on record.
     This occurred because of many clear mornings which tied with 2010 for the greatest number of clear mornings. 
    This September also had the second highest temperature range for the month with 21.7  F.
     Glen Allen had the driest Sep. on record with only 1.56 inches of precipitation and was the driest month since February of 2011. 
    The Airport had 4.05 inches as the result of two thunderstorms on the 2nd and 6th each giving the Airport more than one inch.
     This was the 43rd wettest September since 1887 at the Richmond International Airport.
    The Richmond International Airport’s mean temperature was 70.3 which was the 69th warmest September since 1881. 
     On the 4th the Airport set the only daily record for the month.
     The minimum of 75  F set a record high minimum temperature for the date. The old record was 73  F in 1898, 1953, 1993. 
    Only five September days since 1897 have had a September minimum temperature higher than the 75  F minimum on the 4th.
      The average minimum temperature was 60  F that was the lowest since 2001 when 57.2  F was recorded.  
    The first five days of September were warm with the first five nights staying above 70  F.  
    This was the first September since 1996 that had five or more days the minimum temperature was above 70  F in September.
      
    
    


OCTOBER
    OCTOBER 2012 SUMMARY
    October was a little warmer and wetter than average at the Glen Allen Station when compared to the four year average. 
    The monthly mean temperature was 60.0 F, a +1.1  F departure when compared to the average. 
    Only 2010 was warmer in the past four years. 
    The minimum temperature on the 3rd of 72  F was the highest minimum ever recorded here in October. 
    The 3.95 inches of precipitation for October at Glen Allen was only a +0.07 inch departure.
    The maximum temperature for October was 86  F on the 3rd and there were 8 days the maximum was 80  F or more.
     The lowest minimum temperature was 37  F recorded on October 30 and only 4 days the minimum was in the 30’s.   
    The highest dew point temperature for October was 76  F on the 2nd at 1705 that made 
    it feel like a summer's day and a new record for October.
    The lowest dew point was 31.2  F on the 13th at 1416.  
    The maximum wind gust was 32 mph from the SSW that occurred on the 29th at 2316 from Hurricane Sandy.  
    Hurricane Sandy set a new record low barometric pressure reading in Glen Allen of 28.96 inches. 
    Irene last year had a minimum pressure here of 29.20 inches. 
    Richmond was very fortunate not having damaging winds and flooding from Sandy which was devastating to NY and New Jersey. 
    Remember hurricane Irene made 3 US landfalls, the Outer Banks of NC on August 27, 2011. 
     The 2nd landfall was in SE New Jersey on August 28 and few hours later its final US landfall in Brooklyn, NY City.
    
    The Richmond data base recorded four records this month.
     The high minimum temperature of 74  F recorded on the 3rd tied with 1986 for the 
    highest minimum ever recorded in 115 years in October. 
    The October 8th maximum was 51  F a new 115 year record low maximum for the date; previous record was 53  F in 2000. 
    On October 26th the minimum temperature tied the previous record high minimum for the date of 63  F set in 1971 & 1932. 
    The rainfall on the 29th was 1.96 inches giving a new 125 year record for the date; the previous record was 1.81 inches in 1953.  
    October was the 41st warmest in the past 115 years and the 35th wettest October in the past 125 years of Richmond records. 
     Also only 5 years in the past 115 years recorded a lower maximum temperature than the 47  F maximum temperature on the 30th.  
    They were 46  F in 1940, 45  F in 1936, 45  F in 2002, 45  F in 2011, 44  F in 1925 
    which was the lowest maximum on record in October for Richmond. 
    
    


NOVEMBER
    NOVEMBER 2012 SUMMARY
    This November was the coldest on record (records since 2008) as the monthly mean temperature was 45.43  F, 
    a -5.0  F mean temperature departure when compared with Glen Allen’s four year average. 
    November precipitation was only 0.46 inches which was also the driest November on record;
     the previous record low was 1.85 inches. 
    It was also the driest month on record; the previous record low was February 2009 with 0.67 inches. 
    Measurable precipitation occurred on only two days which is the least on record; 
    the previous record was five days in February 2009. 
      The maximum temperature for November was 75  F on the 11th.
     The lowest minimum was 24  F recorded on the 25th and 29th. 
    November also set a new maximum daily temperature range record of 39  F on November 23rd. 
    There were 14 days the minimum temperature was less than or equal to 32  F which was also a record for November;
     the previous record was 12 in 2008.
         The highest barometer recorded for the month was 30.56 inches on the 17th. 
    The average daily pressure for the month was the highest on record with 30.18 inches; 
    the previous record was 30.13 inches in 2011. 
    The predominance of high-pressure was associated with the unusual dry month.
    
    Richmond International Airport data:
    Richmond had 0.27 inches of rain the 4th driest November of the past 115 years and the 0.12 inches 
    on the 27th was the second lowest daily precipitation since 1887 for November. 
    Precipitation occurred in November on only three days; only one year 1908 had less with two days in the past 125 years. 
    The Airport’s mean temperature for November was 46.3  F which was the 23rd coldest November since 1880. 
    It was also the coldest November since the year 2000. 
    Richmond’s highest minimum temperature for November was 47  which was only 2  above the lowest on record set in 1910.

DECEMBER
  • DECEMBER 2012 SUMMARY
            December was very warm as was December 2011 as the monthly mean temperature was 46.0  F, a +6.1  F 
    departure from the four year Glen Allen average.  
    December had its first 75  F day at Glen Allen on December 4th and had 3 days of >= 70  F and 11 days of >=60  F. 
    A new record maximum dew point temperature of 66.3  F occurred on the 10th. 
    On only 13 days did the minimum reach freezing or below which was a new record for December.
     The lowest temperature was 22  F occurring on the 31st; only in 2011 was this higher with a 25  F minimum.
     The lowest barometric pressure of the month was 29.32 inches recorded on the 21st; the highest was 30.43 inches on December 13th. 
     December didn’t even have a trace of snow and only a slight trace of sleet mixed with rain on the 29th at 3:35 AM. 
     The precipitation total was near average but there was new maximum record of 14 days with measurable precipitation in December. 
    This was also the cloudiest December with the highest average relative humidity on record at Glen Allen.
     The 35 mph maximum wind gust on the 10th was also a new record for December at Glen Allen. (Records since 2008)
         The mean temperature for the Richmond International Airport was 46.6  F which made December the 6th 
    the warmest in the past 115 years and the 8th warmest in the past 132 years. 
    The lowest maximum temperature of 45  F for December occurred on the 28th 
    which was the warmest December low maximum temperature on record;
    the previous record was 44  F recorded in 2011.  
    Richmond’s December minimum temperature was 22  F. 
    Only in 7 years of the past 115 years has this been higher. 
    Richmond’s lowest daily mean temperature for December was 34.5  F which was the 2nd highest recorded in the past 115 years; 
    only 2011 was higher with 36.5  F.
    December didn’t even have a trace of snow and this has happened only 13 times before 2012. 
    The 30-year average snowfall for December is 2.1 inches. 
    The 2.83 inches of precipitation for December was -0.43 inch departure and the 61st driest December of the past 115 years. 
     The total precipitation for the year is 36.52 inches which was a -7.08 inch deficit for 2012.
