THE YEAR 2016
    JANUARY 2016 SUMMARY
    
    						January 2016 Glen Allen
    
    January’s monthly mean temperature was 36.7 F, a - 0.6 F departure and there were 4 days that the maximum temperature was 32 F or less. 
     January had 23 days that the minimum temperature was 32 F or lower. 
    The minimum of 10.8 F on the 19th is the fourth highest minimum temperature recorded for January. 
    Only four days had a temperature of more than 60 F.  The highest temperature this month was 66.1 F recorded on the last day. 
    The maximum of 26.4 F on the 22nd was the lowest maximum for the month. 
    The 33 F temperature range on the 25th was the largest temperature range for January. 
     This January was the clearest since January 2012. 
    The highest barometric pressure was 30.69 inches on January 5th which was the 2nd highest pressure ever recorded in January.
    The average relative humidity for January was 65 percent, the third highest on record, and the average maximum relative humidity was 86.5 percent 
    which was the second highest maximum relative humidity for January. 
    The precipitation for January was 3.96 inches, a departure of +0.83 inches and eight days with measurable precipitation.
    The snowfall for January was 16.4 inches which was a new record for all months and a +11.7 inches departure.
    The previous monthly record was 12.6 inches in 2010. The 15.1 inches was the highest snowstorm total. 
    The previous record was 12.9 inches on December 18-19th 2009. The single day total of 9.1 inches on the 23rd was the second greatest on record. 
    The previous record was 11.4 inches on January 30, 2010. 
    The record number of days with measurable snow on the ground for January was 7 days in 2014; that was broken by the 8 days recorded this January. 
    The maximum wind for the month was 36 mph on the 12th. 
    The wind run record on January 23rd was 227 miles which was the 3rd greatest on record for any day. 
    The highest on record is 284.1 miles on August 27, 2011 associated with tropical storm Irene.
    
    
    					The Richmond International Airport
    
    The Airport tied two daily records for January.  The 4 F temperature range on January 23rd tied the lowest temperature range for the date.  
    The second was 5.3 inches of snow recorded on the 23rd; the previous record was only 2.7 inches recorded in 1908. 
    The 3.30 inches of precipitation was a departure of +0.26 inches making it the 72nd largest January rainfall amount since 1887.
    The mean temperature was 35.6  F with a departure of -2.3  F or the 40th lowest mean in 119 years.
    The 12.1 inches of snow for the month was the 11th greatest monthly snowfall total since 1898 and was also a departure of +7.9 inches. 
    The record monthly total is 28.5 inches set in 1940. The 6.1 inches on the 22nd was the 14th largest snow in January 
    and the 5.3 inches on the 23rd was the 19th largest snow in January.
    This January had 7 days with measurable snow on the ground which tied January 2004. 
    The next year in the records with more was in 2000 with 9 days.
              
    

FEBRUARY
    FEBRUARY 2016 SUMMARY

    February in Glen Allen was warmer than average as the monthly mean temperature was 41.2  F, a +1.8 F departure and the wettest on record. 
    There were 18 days the minimum temperature dropped below freezing and 4 days that the maximum didn’t climb above freezing.
     The 4.42 inches of rain for the month was the wettest February with a + 1.76 inch departure when compared to the 7 year average.
     The month had 13 days with precipitation tying the record of 2012 and was the third cloudiest February on record. 
    The total frozen precipitation was 1.6 inches, a -4.2 inch departure. 
    The highest temperature for February was 74 F on the 1st and the lowest this month was 8 F recorded on the 14th and 
    the mean for the 14th was the 2nd lowest on record for February. 
    On the 28th there was a 36.9 F temperature range and on the 23rd a 4.7 F temperature range. The 28th had the second highest and
     the 23rd had the second lowest range.
     The maximum wind gust of 41 mph from the SSW that occurred on Feb. 25th at 0206 was the 3rd highest recorded in February.  
    The wind run of 186 miles recorded on the 25th was a new record for February and the total wind run for the month took 3rd place.
     The highest barometer recorded for the month was 30.63 inches, on the 19th the second highest and the lowest was 29.32 inches
     on the 24th which was also the 2nd lowest recorded in February and the lowest pressure since March 12, 2014.
      The low pressure was associated with a tornado outbreak in Virginia with 8 confirmed tornadoes.
     The maximum dew point on the 24th was a new record for February at 1350 before the tornado outbreak.
     Two of the tornadoes were F3s and one of the F3s had a 26 mile path over NE VA.
    The winter overall was warmer and wetter with more snow than average.
    January was the coldest, February the wettest and December the warmest December ever recorded in Richmond.

    				Richmond International Airport
    
                 The Richmond International Airport had no daily records for February. 
    In January the Richmond International Airport had the 11th greatest snowstorm on record. 
    But for the winter there was only a +4.5 inch surplus as December and February had negative snow departures.
    This winter was still the snowiest winter since 2009-10. 
    The Airport’s mean temperature was 40.8 F making it the warmest February since 2012 when the mean was 44.7 F 
    and the 47th warmest in the past 119 years. 
    The Airport’s highest maximum temperature was 72  F on the 1st making it the warmest February day since 2012. 
    The winter seasonal departure was +2.9  F using the 30 year averages for the three months.
     It was the warmest winter since 2011-2012 when the average was 44.6 F. 
    The total precipitation was 4.35 inches making it the wettest February since 1998 when 5.76 inches was recorded. 
    The Airport had 13.59 inches of precipitation this winter with a +1.51 inches surplus for the winter season 
    making this the wettest winter since 2009-10 when 14.58 inches was recorded.
     February had a +1.59 inch precipitation departure for the month and was the 26th wettest in the last 129 years.

MARCH
    MARCH 2016 SUMMARY
    
    			Glen Allen Summary March 2016
    
    March was the second warmest after 2012 and the driest on record at Glen Allen. 
    The monthly mean temperature was 54.8 F, a +6.8  F departure based on a 7 year average. 
    Glen Allen had 5 days the minimum temperature was =32 F. Only the first 5 days of March were really cold. 
    The minimum temperature for March was 23 F on the 3rd. 
    The maximum temperature for March was 84 F degrees on the 16th and the lowest maximum temperature
     for the month was 44 F on the 5th that was a new record for Glen Allen. 
    During the warm March of 2012, Glen Allen had 6 days that the maximum temperature was =80 F; 
    this month had only two.  
    Also this March had 11 days that the high temperature was =70  F but March 2012 had 19 days. 
    The maximum temperature range for March was on the 1st with 38.7 F which was the second highest 
    on record for the month at this station.
    The average ground temperature at one foot for the month was 52.5 F which was a +4.3 F departure.
     Only 2012 was warmer at Glen Allen with an average ground temperature of 54.4 F.
    The 1.10 inches of precipitation for March was a -3.06 inch departure on the 7 year average.  
    The most precipitation in a 24 hour period was only 0.33 inches which was the lowest amount for March
     and the second lowest for any month.
    Of the 10 days with measurable precipitation, 5 were =0.10 inches. 
    The total snowfall was 1.9 inches for the month, a departure of -2.0 inches for March.
    The maximum wind gust during March was 40 mph which occurred on the 31st at 1417 hours from the SSW 
    which was the 3rd highest on record. 
    The cloudiness was just a little less than average for the month. 
    The highest barometer was 30.40 inches on the 30th, and the lowest was only 29.60 inches on the 2nd of March
     which is a new record high minimum monthly pressure for Glen Allen.
    
    			Richmond International Airport 
    
    The mean temperature for March was 53.4 F which was the 10th warmest March since 1880.
    It should also be stated that 2012 was the second warmest March on Richmond’s temperature records which start in 1880.
    The mean temperature for this March was +4.8 F above the thirty year mean temperature.
    This March had 14 days that the high temperature was greater than or equal to 70  F but March 2012 had 19 days.
    This March had 7 days that the minimum temperature was =32 F but 2012 had only 3 days.
    The lowest overnight minimum for this month was 23 F on the 3rd. 
    The total precipitation for March, 1.02 inches, was the third driest March since 1871.
    The average March precipitation is 4.04 inches which was a deficit of 3.02 inches.    
    The total snow for March was 1.2 inches which was a departure of +0.6 inches on the 30 year average.
    There were no daily records this March even though it was the 10th warmest on record.
    

APRIL
    APRIL 2016 SUMMARY
    
    			Glen Allen Summary April 2016
     April was cooler than average by -1.4 F. The monthly mean temperature for April was 57.5 F the third lowest on record for April. 
     The average minimum temperature was only 0.4 F from being a new low record for April. 
     April was the third driest at Glen Allen with a total of 2.45 inches, a departure of -0.93 inches based on the average of the past 7 years.
     Measurable precipitation occurred on 11 days and none was intense as the most rain to fall in an hour was 0.33 inches and 0.14 inches in five minutes. 
    The maximum precipitation to occur in 24 hours was only 0.57 inches on the 22nd; the previous record was 0.65 in 2010.
     The cloud cover and average relative humidity were both near average for April. 
    The 16% relative humidity on the 18th was the second lowest on record which added to the Virginia fire threat and the Shenandoah National Park fire.
     The high temperature for April was only 88.5 F on the 26th. This April had five 80 degree days. 
    The maximum daily temperature range was only 43.5 F on the 18th which set a new record for Glen Allen; the previous record was 39 F in 2009. 
    April 28th had only a 6.4 F temperature range which tied for the lowest range for April.
     The lowest minimum was 25.2 F recorded on the 10th which is now the lowest temperature on record at Glen Allen for April; 
    the previous record was 26.4 F on April 3, 2013.
     The small difference in these two records and the very warm March made a big difference in plants. 
    Damage occurred on the young growth on Nandina Bushes, Roses, Hydrangeas, Tea Olive Shrubs 
    and even slight damage to bloom of Spice Bush Viburnum and Lilacs.
     April had three days with freezing temperatures and six days with some frost. 
    The coldest day (lowest daily mean temperature) was 40.8 F occurring on the 10th and was the second lowest on record for April. 
    The warmest day (highest daily mean temperature) was 76.5 F occurring on the 26th. 
    The maximum wind gust was 36 mph from the SSW that occurred on the 4th at 1601 preceding a strong cold front. 
    April was also the second windiest on record with a wind run of 2595.9 miles. 
    There was a short snow flurry that occurred April 9th from 10:58 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
    
    			Richmond International Airport
    The Airport tied two daily records one for lowest minimum temperature on April 6th of 27 F that also occurred in 1975. 
     It was also 27 F on the 10th but the record for that date was 23 F. 
    Only 11 Aprils since 1897 have had a lower minimum temperature than the 27 F of this April.
     The second tie was for the high daily mean temperature for April 1st which was 71.5 F that tied with 1979 for the warmest first day of April. 
    The highest maximum temperature in April was 87 F that occurred on the 19th and 26th.
     The Richmond International Airport’s April mean temperature was 56.6  F which was a departure of negative 1.6 F 
    and was the 49th coolest April in the past 119 years. 
     The daily temperature range on the 18th was 44 F which wasn’t a record for the date
     but only 12 Aprils since 1897 have had a higher temperature range recorded in April.
     The April precipitation total was 2.17 inches which was a departure of -1.10 inches. 
    Only 29 Aprils in the past 129 years have been drier.
     The Airport had 0.28 inches less precipitation than Glen Allen during April. 
     The Airport reported no snow in April. 
    The last measurable snow for Richmond in April was one inch on April 7, 2007.
        
    
MAY
    MAY 2016 SUMMARY
    
    					Glen Allen, Virginia
    May’s mean temperature was 64.9 F a -3.9 F departure and the coolest on record for Glen Allen. 
    The maximum temperature for May was 90 F on the 26th and the minimum was 40.6 F on the 16th.
    The average maximum was 73.8 F a higher departure of -5.5 F 
    and a new record low average maximum for Glen Allen because of cloudiness. 
    The minimum average had only a -2.3 F departure. 
    May was not only the cloudiest May on record but also the cloudiest month ever recorded at this station. 
    May had a record of 17 days with measurable rainfall; the previous record was 16 days. 
    May’s precipitation was 8.55 inches a departure of +4.57 inches and the wettest May on record. 
    The cloudy rainy days gave the lowest average temperature range of 17.7 F on record. 
    The average relative humidity was 75.9 percent and new record high for May. 
    The average ground temperature was only 0.1 F from the lowest on record for May 
    and with the cloudiness and cool days gave gardeners problems with early planting. 
    This year is the latest I can remember setting out tomato plants because of the wet ground.

    				Richmond International Airport
    The Airport’s mean temperature of 63.8 F, was a -2.6 departure, and the 18th coolest May since 1897.
     It is interesting that the average maximum was 72.6 F a -5.3 F departure because of all the cloudy days. 
    The average minimum temperature was 54.9 F a departure of only -0.1 F because of the warmer cloudy nights. 
    The average temperature range for May was only 17.7 F the second lowest in 119 years; only 2003 was lower. 
    The Airport’s precipitation for May was 9.79 inches the wettest in 144 years with a +6.01 inch departure. 
    The previous May record was 9.13 inches in 1889.
     It was the wettest month since tropical storm Gaston in 2004 when the rain total for August was 16.30 inches. 
    The Airport had 16 days with measurable precipitation in May the most since 2003. 
    The May record is 23 days and there has been only 6 Mays with more than 16 days. 
    The Airport had four days with = 1 inch of rain; the record is five set in 1972. 
    The Richmond International Airport had 3 new daily records that either tied or were broken.
    Maximum Precipitation
    May 2nd 1.31 inches; the previous record was 1.12 inches in 1995.
    Low Minimum Temperatures
    May 16th   39 F tied the previous record set in 1984, 1920 (May’s monthly lowest is 31 F on May 9, 1956.)
    Low temperature Range
    May 21st  6 F set a new record; the previous record was 7 F in 2015 and 1909

     This was a very strange spring with extremes. 
    March was the tenth warmest since 1897 arousing spring plants. 
    Then on April 6th and 10th the plants were given a hard freeze.
     The Airport had 27 F both nights and only 11 Aprils have had a lower temperature. 
    Plants and even bushes were hurt like Nandina, Hydrangeas, Lilacs, and Viburnum blooms. 
    March was the third driest March since 1887 and May was the wettest since 1871.
     The very warm March was also the third driest since 1887 
    and was followed by the 31st driest and 49th coolest April in 119 years.
     Then May with its record rainfall and prolific cloudiness and cool temperatures through the first 22 days of May 
    inhibited the growth of warm season vegetables.
    This spring wasn't a good season for gardeners.
    


JUNE
    JUNE 2016 SUMMARY
    
     						Glen Allen
    
           June had a very large difference in precipitation at the Glen Allen station and the Richmond International Airport. 
    The 3.89 inches monthly precipitation at Glen Allen was a departure of negative 0.21 inches and the Airport had a +3.88 inch departure.  
    Glen Allen had 9 days in June with measurable precipitation and a dry period of ten consecutive days with only a trace of rain from the 6th to the 15th.   
    The Glen Allen station has had 3.92 inches less rain this month than the Richmond International Airport.
     Thunderstorms have caused varying rainfall amounts over the region. 
    Thunder was heard on five days during June. 
    The thunderstorm of June 16th was a severe and gave wind damage over much of Henrico County due to fallen trees. 
    At the height of the storm some 160,000 customers in the Richmond area were without power, according to Dominion Virginia Power. 
    The maximum wind for June here was 42 mph on the 16th from the NNW in the thunderstorm. 
    This was the second highest high wind gust recorded for June. 
     It was the worst thunderstorm at this Glen Allen Station since June 25th 2012 with a wind gust of 47 mph.
    The mean temperature for June was 75.4 F with a negative 0.9 F departure. 
    The highest temperature for the month was 95 F on the 12th. 
    Only 4 days had a maximum temperature of =90 F which is the least on record. 
    The lowest temperature was 50 on the 9th which tied for the lowest on record for June. 
    The 9th also set a new maximum daily temperature range of 33 F. 
    The highest dew point temperature for June was 76.5 F on the 24th which tied for the second lowest recorded in June 
    and also had the lowest heat index in the past seven years for June.
    
    					Richmond International Airport
    
           The Richmond International Airport had 7.81 inches of precipitation for June which was +3.88 inch departure 
    and was the seventh wettest June in the past 144 years.  
    Wakefield does not consider the records before 1887 as official on precipitation. 
    The greatest June precipitation total is 9.93 inches in June 2004. June had only 9 days with precipitation even though it was the 7th wettest June. 
    This occurred due to June having a dry period in this wet month of ten days with only a trace of precipitation and the fact 3.63 inches of rain fell in one day. 
    The Airport had only one daily record for June. 
    The record was for the highest daily rainfall for June 3rd of 3.63 inches. 
    It is also interesting that only one other June day has had more precipitation occur which was on June 18, 1972 from Tropical Storm Agnes with 3.91 inches. 
    The 34 wettest Junes had but one year 1963 with fewer days of measurable rainfall for the month.
    The Richmond International Airport reported the mean temperature for June of 74.5 F which was a -0.8 F departure and the 61st coolest since 1897. 
    The highest daily maximum temperature was 94 F on the 12th and the lowest minimum temperature was 49 F which occurred on June 9th.  
    The record minimum for June is 40 F in 19
    


JULY
    JULY 2016 SUMMARY
    
    						 The Glen Allen Station
    July was the second wettest July on record at the Glen Allen station. The 5.79 inches monthly precipitation was a departure of +1.63 inches.  
    There were 15 days with measurable precipitation which ties the maximum number for July. 
    The mean temperature of 81.1 F was +1.4 F departure for the eight year average and the 3rd hottest month on record. 
    The record is 82.7 F in 2012. This July had 22 days with temperatures of =90 F which tied the July record. 
    The maximum temperature range for July was 25 F on the 14th which tied for the lowest monthly daily temperature range. 
    The lowest daily temperature range was 8 F on the 4th which ties for the lowest daily range for any July. 
    The lowest dew point temperature for July was 61 F on the 21st which is now the highest minimum dew point for July. 
    The highest dew point was 79.7 F on the 24th; the eight year record is 80.9  F.  
    The highest heat index for July was 117.6 F on the 24th which tied the old record set in 2011. 
     In contrast to all of July’s heat on July 3rd the high temperature was only 73.3 F which occurred at midnight. 
    The daytime high was only 68 F at 1650 which is the coolest July day ever recorded at Glen Allen. 
    It was the coolest July 3rd day at the Airport since 1962 which made the heat that followed on the 5th seem even more uncomfortable.
    Rainfall amounts varied greatly over the area and the Richmond International Airport had only 4.47 inches. 
    Glen Allen had 15 days with measurable precipitation which tied the record for July. 
    The maximum precipitation recorded in a 24 hour period was 1.73 inches on the 18th and 19th which was the second greatest on record for July.  
    The average relative humidity of 74.1 percent was the 3rd highest on record for July.
     However, the average daily maximum and the highest monthly minimum relative humidity both set records for July. 
    These factors helped in giving July the third lowest temperature range of 19.5 F on record at Glen Allen.  
    
    						Richmond International Airport
    The Richmond International Airport average mean temperature was 79.8 F which made July the 26th warmest since 1897 with a departure of +0.5 F. 
    The higher relative humidity helped lower the daily temperature range for the month to 18.5 F which is a departure of -1.7 F. 
    This July had 16 days with temperatures of =90 F which tied the July record in 2013. 
    The maximum daily temperature range for the month was 25 F.  
    Only seven years of the past 119 years had a lower temperature range for July. 
    Only 24 Julys since 1897 have had a lower average daily temperature range! 
    It is also surprising that the maximum temperature was only 71 F on July 3rd which was the coolest July 3rd since 1962. 
    There are also only 15 Julys since 1897 that have had a lower monthly temperature than 71 F. 
    The record low maximum temperature for July is 65 F set on July 21, 1939. The lowest minimum temperature recorded in July was only 61 F; 
    only ten Julys have had warmer monthly minimum temperatures in the past 119 years.
    The Airport had only 4.47 inches of precipitation which was a departure of only - 0.04 inches.  
    July was also the 64th wettest July on record and had -1.32 inches less than Glen Allen.
    The Richmond International Airport had no daily records set in July.
    


AUGUST
    AUGUST 2016 SUMMARY
    
    			Glen Allen Station 2016
     The monthly mean temperature for August was 81.1 F, a +3.9  F mean temperature departure 
    based on an eight-year average and the highest on record.
     The maximum temperature for August was 98.1 F on the 14th the highest on record for August. 
     The lowest minimum was only 63.5 F on the 22nd and 24th, the 2nd highest on record. 
    The highest minimum temperature of 78.8 set a new record for August. 
    There were 22 nights the temperature was =70 F.
     Glen Allen was not only hot but humid with the highest maximum, minimum and mean temperature averages on record
    and an average relative humidity of 73.5% which was the 2nd highest on record.
     The lowest relative humidity was 37% on the 27th which was the 2nd highest minimum on record. 
    The 13th had the second highest dew point for August and was only 0.1 F from the record.
     The highest temperature range was only 25 F on the 29th also a record low in part because of the humid air.
    Also both max. and min. average daily means were record August highs. 
    The average ground temperature at one foot was 80.1 F a new record for August.

    The Richmond International Airport had only 0.53 inches of rain for the 3rd driest August in the past 143 years. 
    Only 1943 and 1896 were drier and the August record for the Airport is 0.45 inches in 1896. 
    The Airport reported only 4 days with measurable rain; no August in the past 143 years has reported fewer days of rain.
     The Richmond International Airport had an August mean temperature of 80.3 F and was the 6th warmest August since 1880. 
    The record is 1900 with a mean of 82.9 F. The Airport’s highest daily minimum was 78 F on the 13th. 
    Only three years since 1880 have had a higher minimum in August.
     The highest maximum was 99  F on the 26th which tied the record maximum for the date. 
    The Airport had four daily records that were tied or broken.
     The Aug. 26th maximum of 99 F tied record 1975, August 13th minimum of 78 is a new record; the previous record was 77 F in 1995,
     and August 14th minimum of 77 is a new record; the previous record was 76 F set in 1943, 
    and the August 17th minimum of 76 tied the record set in 2010 and 1997.

    SEPTEMBER 2016 SUMMARY
    
     					Glen Allen
       
           September at Glen Allen was the warmest, wettest, greatest number of days with rain, cloudiest,
     most humid (+5% departure), and the lowest temperature range (-3.9 F departure). 
     The monthly mean temperature was 74.6 F a +3.3 F departure when compared to the average.  
    The lowest minimum temperature for the month was only 57 F; the previous high minimum was only 52 F in 2010. 
    The month’s maximum temperature of 97 F on September 9th was 3.8 F above the seven-year average monthly maximum. 
    The 6.69 inches of precipitation for September was a +3.02 inch departure with a record 13 days of measurable precipitation. 
    However, September had a very dry period of 10 days without rain from the 9th to the 18th.
     Because of the cloudiness and high relative humidity, the average temperature range was only 15.8 degrees for September.
     On the 21st the temperature range was only 2.9 F a new record for any date September in the past seven years.
     It is interesting there were no strong low pressures; the lowest pressure was only 29.82 inches
    which is the highest minimum pressure ever recorded in September. 
    The month also had the highest minimum dew point for September. On the 10th the highest heat index was recorded.
     The average ground temperature at a foot averaged 75.1 F a new maximum record.
     Also there were only 6 nights that the minimum didn’t dropped below 70 F and only one night with a minimum less than 60 F.
    
    
    
    				Richmond International Airport
    
          The Richmond Airport had a mean temperature of 74 degrees which was a departure of +3.4 degrees 
    making it the 13th highest mean temperature for September since 1897. 
    The average minimum temperature was 65.9 which was the 2nd highest in the past 119 years; 
    only September 1921 was higher by 0 .5 degrees.
     The average temperature range was 16.1 F; only 1979 had a lower temperature range of 15.6 F. 
    On the 21st the airport set a record low temperature range for the date of 4 F; 
    only 8 years have a lower temperature range for any date in the month. 
    The average minimum temperature was 65.9 F which was a departure of +5.8 F. 
    The lowest minimum temperature was 58 F which is the highest minimum on record for September since 1897.
     The Airport set two daily records, the 4.74 inches of precipitation on the 28th and the low temperature range of 4 F on the 21st
    The Richmond International Airport recorded 11.19 inches of precipitation giving a departure of +7.06 inches
     also making this the 2nd wettest September in the past 143 years. 
    The 4.74 inches on the 28th was the 2nd greatest rainfall in a calendar day; 
    only the 4.91 inches that occurred on September 5, 1935 was greater. 
    The Airport had 14 days with measurable precipitation which was the most recorded in September except for three years (1993,1945,1888). 
    Only September 1999 with 16.60 inches because of Tropical Storm Floyd had more precipitation in the month of September.
    


OCTOBER
    OCTOBER 2016 SUMMARY
    
    					Glen Allen   
    
     Glen Allen had the warmest October on record. 
    The month started out cloudy and wet with low temperature ranges and 88% of the month’s precipitation on the 8th and 9th.
     There was only 0.10 inches of rain for the rest of the month.
     The last two-thirds of the month was sunny with large temperature ranges and heavy dews and no killing frost. 
    Glen Allen also had the second highest average ground temperature at one foot on record for October.
    The monthly mean temperature was 62.7 F +3.3 F departure when compared to the eight-year average. 
    The lowest minimum temperature was 37.9 F on the 23rd which is the highest minimum temperature on record for October.
     The month’s maximum temperature of 89.3 F on the 19th was the second highest maximum temperature 
    on record for October and the highest for so late in October.
    The 3.43 inches of precipitation on the 8th and 9th was from Tropical Storm Matthew and both the calendar day rain (2.81 inches)
     and the 24-hour rainfall (3.43 inches) were the most precipitation since Tropical Storm Irene on Aug. 27, 2011. 
    The total October precipitation was 4.04 inches which was a 0.60-inch departure. There were seven days with measurable precipitation. 
    The maximum wind gust of 38 mph on the 9th was from Matthew which set a record for the maximum wind gust for October. 
    The highest one day wind run on the 9th was 206.8 miles which was the second highest on record for October. 
    This October was the clearest on record and the 5th clearest for all months.
    
    
    				Richmond International Airport
    
    The Richmond Airport had two daily records this month.  
    The 3.31 inches of rain on the 8th set a new record for the date; the previous record was 2.94 inches in 1996. 
    This was also the 6th greatest October precipitation in a calendar day.
     The total precipitation for October was 4.24 inches making it the 33rd wettest October.
     This was also a +1.26-inch departure for October. 
    The 87 F maximum temperature on the 19th tied the record set in 1938 for the date and was also the high temperature for the month.
     The October mean temperature was 62.4 F which was the 14th warmest October since 1897 and was a +2.7  departure from average. 
    The lowest daily mean temperature was 50 F on the 26th which was the 10th warmest on record for October. 
    The highest minimum temperature was 61 F on the 8th. Only 1995 with a minimum of 63 F was higher for the month of October.  
    


NOVEMBER
    NOVEMBER 2016 SUMMARY

    This November was the second driest on record (records since 2008) as the monthly precipitation was 1.64 inches, 
    a negative 2.45 inch departure when compared with Glen Allen’s eight year average. 
    Precipitation occurred on 8 days in November and the month was the second clearest on record. 
    The maximum temperature for November was 84.1 F on the 3rd which was a new record monthly maximum
    and surpassed the old record by +5 F and set a new heat index for November. 
    The daily mean temperature on the 3rd was 70.9 F which tied the record for the warmest November day on record at Glen Allen.  
    This was also the first temperature above 80 F for November. 
    The month had 3 days with the maximum temperature of = 75 F.
     The lowest minimum was 21.8 F recorded on the 22nd.  
    There were 9 days that the minimum temperature was less than or equal to 32 F which was near the average. 
     The clear days of November gave large daily temperature ranges and set 7 daily high records 
    and the average range of 26.1 F set a new high record average for November. 
    The 39 F temperature range on the 13th also tied the record high for November. 
    The maximum barometer reading for the month was 30.50 inches occurring on the 7th. 
    The highest dew point for the month was 65 F on the 2nd which was average for November.  
    The maximum wind gust was only 35 mph on the 29th which tied the record high wind gust for November.

          Glen Allen fall season was +2.7 F warmer than normal based on an 8-year average.
          Glen Allen average autumn temp. was 62.6 F the warmest autumn on record with a +2.7 F departure.
          Glen Allen had the 3rd wettest autumn with 11.20 inches of precipitation and a departure of +1.17 inches.
          The precipitation surplus was mainly caused by the wet September
    
    				Richmond International Airport
    The average November maximum temperature was 49.8 which was the 50th warmest since 1897 
    and a departure from normal of -0.6 F. 
    The 1.08 inches of precipitation recorded this month was the 19th driest Nov. of the past 129 years. 
    This was a negative 2.16-inch departure from normal with a total of 7 days with measurable precipitation. 
    The Airport’s greatest daily rainfall was 0.34 inches on the 14th. 
    Only 12 years have had a November with a smaller daily maximum in November. 
    The 83 F on the 3rd tied the record for the date set in 1974.  
    Only seven years had a higher November maximum temperature. 
    The highest on record is 86 F in 1993, 1974, and 1950. 
    Only six years had a November with the lowest daily temperature range being greater than 11 F.
    The average temperature range was 24.6 F with only 16 of 119 years having a higher average, 
    the result of many clear days and nights.
    No snow occurred during the month which has occurred 62 times in the past 119 years.

    The precipitation surplus for the fall season was +6.16 inches based on a 30-year average.
    The Airport average autumn temp was 62.0 F a departure of +1.8 F the warmest fall since 1970 when it was 62.5 F.
    The two tables differ as Glen Allen has an 8 year ave. and the Airport has a 30-year average.
    Rainfall varied greatly because of thunderstorms and tropical storm Matthew.

  • DECEMBER 2016 SUMMARY
    
     					Glen Allen, Virginia
            December was the third coldest and third driest on record at Glen Allen.
    The monthly mean temperature was 41.4 F, a -1.6 F departure from the eight-year average. 
    December had its highest maximum of 68.2 F on December 1st but had only 3 days of =65 F for the month.
    On 16 days, the minimum reached freezing or below which was fourth greatest in December in the past 8-years. 
    The lowest temperature was 13 F occurring on the 16th which was the lowest minimum ever recorded at Glen Allen in December.
     Glen Allen had two days the minimum temperature was below 15 F; the only other year this occurred was 2010. 
    The lowest dew point on December 15th was -7.3 F which set a new record; the previous record was only -1.4 F in 2010.  
    The highest barometric pressure for December was 30.70 inches recorded on the 19th,
    which was the 3rd highest barometric pressure for December. 
    The average daily pressure for December was 30.20 inches a new record for December. 
    The previous record was 30.17 inches in 2014. 
    December had a minor trace of sleet associated with a glaze on the 17th.  
    The precipitation total for the month was 3.11 inches which was a 1.61-inch negative departure based on an eight-year average. 
    There were 9 days with measurable precipitation in December and only December of 2011 had less. 
    The total precipitation for the year was 47.73 inches which was a 1.54-inch surplus. 
    Only 2010 had a lower average relative humidity of 64.2% which is the low record for December.   
    
    				Richmond International Airport
    The mean temperature for the Richmond International Airport was 41.1 F which was exactly average. 
    December was the 52nd warmest in the past 119 years. 
    The minimum temperature of 15 F on the 16th was the lowest minimum in December since 2010 when 15 F was also recorded. 
    The lowest maximum temperature of 29 F for December occurred on the 16th which was also the lowest since 2010.  
    December didn’t even have a trace of frozen precipitation. 
    This was the 17th year in the past 119 years that Richmond didn’t have a trace of snow in December. 
    The 30-year average snowfall for December is 2.1 inches. 
    The 2.80 inches of precipitation for December made it the 61st driest December in the past 129 years.  
    The total precipitation for 2016 was 52.75 inches which was a 9.15-inch surplus for the year. 
    The Airport also set 1 daily maximum precipitation record for the date on December 6th with 1.22 inches; 
    the old record was 1.17 inches set in 1930.
