    AUGUST 2008 SUMMARY
    August was a dichotomy being very dry then very wet. 
    Rainfall of only 0.02 of an inch fell in the first twenty-five days then 4.02 inches fell in the last six days. 
    There was an eighteen day period with no measurable rain from the 8th to 25th.  
    We had eleven days with thunder heard in the month of August which is unusual and six of these were 
    from the August 25th to the 31st.
    August average maximum temperature was 87.3  F.  
    August average minimum temperature was 65.7  F.  
    August mean average temperature was 76.5  F. 
    The most rain in a calendar day was 1.85 inches.
    The most rain in a 24 hour period was 2.60 inches. 
    The total rainfall for August was 4.04 inches. 
    August had 13 days with 90 F or above temperatures and three days with a temperature of 95  F.   
    The month’s average temperature range was 21.6  F.
    The maximum wind gust was only 21 mph from the north occurred on the 11th at 1755 hours.
    The maximum dew point temperature was 74.3  F on the 29th at 1452 hours.
    The minimum dew point temperature was 47.7  F on the 19th at 1604 hours.
    


    SEPTEMBER 2008 SUMMARY
    September here when compared to the averages at Richmond Airport was wetter and warmer than average.  
    The total rainfall at the Glen Allen – Springfield Park Weather Center was 5.61 inches and the average at the 
    Richmond Airport was 3.98 inches. 
    The 3.05 inches of rain on the 5th and 6th was the greatest 24 hour rainfall during the month and the 
    greatest in a calendar day was 2.93 inches on the 6th from the remnants of the tropical storm Hanna.  
    The most intense one hour rainfall recorded on September 6th was 0.89 inches.  
    September’s mean average temperature here was 71.2  F which was exactly 1.0  F above the September 
    average for the Richmond Airport.  
    The maximum temperature for September was 93 F which occurred on the 3rd and 13th which is hot for 
    September. 
    The minimum temperature during the month was 49  F on the 20th.
    The maximum wind gust of 28 mph from the NNE occurred on the 6th at 1320 in tropical storm Hanna. 
    Hanna also gave the lowest barometer reading for the month on the 6th when the barometric pressure 
    dropped to 29.44 inches.
    


    OCTOBER 2008 SUMMARY
    October was a little warmer than average (when compared to Ashland, VA records) as the monthly mean 
    temperature was 57.7  F, a + 0.4  F departure, and much drier than average rainfall for the month.  
    The 1.13 inches of rain for October was a -2.30 inch departure when compared to the Ashland, VA average.  
    The maximum rainfall recorded in a day was only 0.56 inches and measurable rainfall occurred only six days.  
    The only rainy day was the 17th with rainfall from 0600 to 2100 hours.
    The maximum temperature for October was 88 F on October 16th which was the same temperature reported 
    at the Richmond International airport and only 2  F from their record for the date. 
    It was also noted that Richmond has never had a higher temperature than 89  F after the 16th of October.  
    The 29  F recorded here on the 30th was also very cold for the date.
    The maximum wind gust of 29 mph occurred on the 26th at 1031 from a cold frontal passage associated 
    with a low pressure passing to our north.  
    The lowest barometer was 29.64 inches on the 1st which was the lowest barometer recorded in October. 
    The highest barometer was 30.60 inches on the 23rd which was the highest barometer recorded for the month.  
    The average barometric pressure for the month was 30.15 inches which is high for October.  
    This corresponds well with the many clear days and nights and the high temperature ranges recorded.  
    On October 31st the low temperature was 32  F and the high was 68  F a 36  F daily temperature 
    range and a 35  F daily temperature range occurred on the 14th.
    


    NOVEMBER 2008 SUMMARY
     November was cooler than average as the monthly mean temperature was 46.88  F, a -1.0  F departure, 
    and was also wetter than average (when compared to Ashland, VA records).  
    The 4.53 inches of rain for November was a +1.35 inch departure when compared to the Ashland, VA average.  
    Two rainbows were seen during the month on the 5th and the 12th. 
    The maximum rainfall recorded in a day was 2.37 inches on the 15th in an early morning thunderstorm with 
    intense rainfall. 
    This late season thunderstorm gave a very intense and heavy rainfall with 0.55 inches of rain in just five 
    minutes between 0225 and 0230. 
    The maximum in fifteen minute was 1.09 inches and in one hour a total of 1.83 inches. 
    Measurable precipitation occurred on ten days and only a trace of snow for the month recorded on the 18th.  
    The rainy and gloomy day of the 30th made for rough Thanksgiving Holiday return travel particularly along 
    the East Coast and in the Great Lakes due to a second low pressure.
    The maximum temperature for November was 76 F on November 15th and the lowest minimum was 21  F 
    recorded here on the 21st and 22nd which was cold for the date.
    The maximum wind gust of 31 mph occurred on the 15th at 1230 preceding a cold frontal passage associated 
    with a low pressure passing to our north.  
    The lowest barometer for the month was 29.29 inches on the 30th. 
    The highest barometer recorded for the month was 30.53 inches on the 22nd.  
    On November 1st the low temperature was 38  F and the high was 75  F giving a 37  F daily temperature 
    range which is large for this area.
      
    


    DECEMBER 2008 SUMMARY
    December was warmer than average as the monthly mean temperature was 43.19  F, a +4.2  F departure, 
    and was also wetter than average (when compared to Ashland, Virginia records).  
    The 4.39 inches of rain for December was a +1.09 inch departure when compared to the Ashland, VA average.  
    The maximum rainfall recorded in a day was 2.54 inches on the 11th in an all day rain. 
    Measurable precipitation occurred on thirteen days and only 0.4 inches of snow for the month recorded on the 
    6th which was a -1.6 inch departure compared to Ashland, Virginia records.  
    December was cloudier than average.      
    The maximum temperature for December was 71 F on December 15th and December 28th and the 
    lowest minimum was 15  F recorded here on the 22nd.      
    The maximum wind gust of 30 mph occurred on the 28th at 1159 from the west from a cold frontal passage 
    associated with a low pressure passing to our north.  
    The 31st NW wind was thought to be stronger than that of the 28th but the anemometer is sheltered by 
    woods to northwest of this station. 
    The lowest barometer for the month was 29.39 inches on the 1st. The highest barometer recorded for the 
    month was 30.71 inches on the 23rd.
